Teacher Gift Ideas for Year End and Teacher Appreciation Week

Well, I wanted to show you a craft tutorial today but my weekend was so busy I didn’t get anything done…boo! I bought all the stuff to make Alec’s gift for his teacher for year end but plan on making it soon. I thought I would share with you what I plan on making as well as some other fun teacher gift ideas. Also, Teacher Appreciation Week is May 7-11 with Teacher Appreciation Day being Tuesday, May 8. These gift ideas would be perfect!

DIY kinda girl made this beautiful monogrammed wedding gift and I thought it would be perfect for a teacher gift. I have bought all the supplies but just need to make it. I hope she isn’t reading this post but if she is, oh well. I hope she loves it! I went to her Facebook page to figure out the year she got married, sneaky ;)

Another great gift idea that you could make is a Monogrammed door mat. At Home in the northwest shows us how to make one.

Brooklyn Limestone shows us a great way to spruce up a plate from the Dollar Tree. Maybe it would be fun to get all the kids to sign it and put in the middle of the plate, Thanks for Teaching us 2011-2012. If you could find out her favorite lyrics to a song or bible verse, that would be even better.

My First IKEA Experience

OH MY WORD!!! On our way back from Florida this past weekend I got to finally visit my first ever IKEA. I am in LOVE!! I so wish they had one here in Nashville. I loved the fact I could check-in my Kindergartner into their playland for 45 minutes while we went and shopped. I had my wish list armed and ready and I was specifically buying for my craft room I am fixin to redo.

Let me show you what we bought. I wish we had a trailer and I would have brought back more from the Atlanta store :)

I have been shopping around for lanterns because they are so darn cute and make great decor. This was on sale for only $9.00. YES PLEASE! I was so excited :) I am not sure I will keep the silver look or paint it. But for $9.00, WOW!

These gems I just had to have. They are the cutest star tealight lanterns and they were only $3.99 a piece! Love it! I can’t wait to show you how I am going to transform these to put on my mantel for Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day :)

Last but not least is what I went there for in the first place. My craft room supplies:

Here is a break down of what I got:

  1. Bygel 39 1/4″ Rod (4 @ $2.99 each)
  2. Bygel S hooks 10 per bag (10 @ $.99 each)
  3. Fintorp bucket (4 @ $3.99 each)
  4. Bygel basket 13 x 3 7/8″ (4 @ $1.99 each)
  5. Rationell Variera (3 @$1.99 each)
Total cost for craft room supplies: $51.75
You are probably wondering what I am doing with all this. Well, Pinterest was my inspiration. Let me show you my inspiration and when I get my craft room makeover finished I will show you the finished product :) Click on the pictures below to take you to my sources :)
Up at the top are the white bag holders or the Rationell Variera. It also makes for great wrapping paper holders:
The rails, S hooks, buckets and baskets will be placed on the wall and will hopefully look similar to this:
On my rails will be a bucket and basket on each rail. What will that look like? Hopefully something like this:
The baskets are PERFECT for ribbon and now WASHI Tape storage :)
And the buckets:
They will be holding all my scissors, pencils, pens, etc.
I CAN NOT wait to get my craft room makeover completed to share with you and all that wall storage for just over $50.00, HELLO! I am so excited and I am a brand new IKEA fan :)

If you can please vote for me here. It only takes one click and you can do this daily :)

Tuesday Pinterest Inspiration Party #2

Yesterday was my first giveaway and you still have plenty of time to enter it here. It’s free people! Why wouldn’t you want to win? It’s amazing the effect that Pinterest is having on blogs. I heart Pinterest. If you are not on Pinterest let me know and I would be happy to send you an invite. Last week we had some great entries and I am showcasing my favorites below. Friday night was my Monthly Pinterest Girls Night Out. I can’t wait to tell you about it in March. Everyone did their own thing and their projects turned out AMAZING! I have a sneak peak below.

Here are my favorite entries last week for my first Pinterest party. If you are featured please feel free to grab an “I was featured” button on my buttons tab.

Kristi at Bowl of Cherrys created a cute PS I heart you sign. You can find her post here. Here is what she made:

I absolutely love this. I really wanted to do an X & O this year for my decor but I just couldn’t find an Ampersand. I love how she used a variety of items to complete her project. I just couldn’t think outside the box like that for some reason. I am so doing this next year.

Kristyn at Lil’ Luna created an adorable Valentine’s Pop Box Treats. You can find her post here. Here is what she made:

I absolutely love this idea to give to a teacher for a sweet Valentine’s Day gift. I also saw a version of this on Pinterest called 30 sucks with 30 suckers in it. Love the Valentine’s Day candy corn. Either I live a sheltered life or this is new candy to the Valentine’s Day genre.

Last week I went to our Monthly Pinterest Girls Night out and here’s a preview of what was created that night all inspired by…you got it Pinterest :)

Now on to my Tuesday Pinterest Inspiration Party #2. If you created something that was inspired by Pinterest you may link up here. Can’t wait to see what y’all have created!

Conversation Hearts Wall Decor

This creation was inspired by Pinterest and you can find her post here: http://thepeanutpaintshop.blogspot.com/2011/01/love-is-in-air.html

I’m a perfectionist. I love The Peannut Paintshop version but don’t love mine :-( Here are my hearts:

Here are the items you’ll need:

  • 4″ wooden hearts (Unfinished wood section at Michael’s for $.59 each)
  • Paint
  • Paint Pen
  • Ribbon
  • Hot glue
  • Tulle

To help mix the paint colors just right I bought some conversation hearts and mixed the paint till I got my desired color. I used the hot pink paint pen to write the names. To be honest, I don’t like the look of the paint pen. Next week, I am hoping to make an egg version of this and plan on doing it a little differently so stay tuned. We hot glued the hearts to the ribbon and hung with tulle. I love the personalization of these. Can’t wait to show you the eggs next week. Maybe they will be glitterized!

Here is where I am linking up today:

Pinterest Girls Night Out January 2012

This month our girls night out featured Valentine’s Day wreaths. My wreath that I created, one for me and one for a friend, was inspired by this blog post here: http://kamibuchanan.blogspot.com/2010/01/valentine-tulle-wreath.html

Here are my finished wreaths:

I apologize for the lighting. I took these with my phone :-( I do LOVE how these turned out!

Here is a picture of the wreaths the other girls created with me that night. You can tell, we all did our own thing and that is OK!

Items you’ll need for the Valentine’s Monogrammed Tulle Wreath:

  • Wreath form or wire (you can always use a coat hanger turned into a circle)
  • Tulle
  • Wooden letter (Michael’s for 2.99)
  • Spray adhesive
  • Glitter
  • Mod Podge Sealer

Kami gave a great tutorial however, I’m going to add my helpful hints:

  • When making on a wreath form:If purchase your tulle at a fabric store you will need about 8 yards total of fabric or 4 yards each in coordinating color. If you purchase the tulle on a spool at a craft store you will need about 80 yards of tulle or 40 yards each in coordinating color. I did the G wreath in light pink and dark pink. I did the E wreath in a white and dark pink.
  • I love the look of the initial. It gives it that special monogram feel. My wooden letter was already white. I used spray adhesive and sprinkled glitter on my letter. I did this three times to get the amount of glitter I wanted. Hey…what girl doesn’t like to glitterize ;) To keep the glitter from shedding and falling everywhere you can seal it by using the Mod Podge Sealer. It does take a few good coats of the sealer. Here is a picture of the one I use:

I hope you enjoyed seeing what I made at our January Pinterest Girls Night Out. If you host or attend a Pinterest Girls Night Out please join my blog party here! If you love to recreate things you found on Pinterest please join my blog party here!

Pinterest Girls Night Out December 2011

This month was inspired by this tutorial here: http://www.thecreativityexchange.com/2010/12/fabric-covered-poster-board-christmas-tree-cones.htm

Here is how my trees turned out:

Here is a look at all the trees the girls did. I love how you can achieve so many looks. The one made of tinsel turned out gorgeous!

This GNO was fun. We learned a lot when we did our fabric trees. I am not going to give you a step by step because The Creativity Exchange does a much better job but I will give you some helpful hints.

Items you’ll need:

  • Poster board (4 *One to cut the strip to make the template for the 3 you will be using)
  • Packing tape
  • Spray adhesive
  • 3 pieces of coordinating fabric (1 yd. should make one large and one medium tree or 2 small and 1 medium)
  • Trim to decorate the tree
  • Candlesticks with large tops
  • Oil Rubbed Bronze spray paint to paint your bases for the tree

Helpful Hints:

I used fabric that I already had on hand. I had leftover fabric from curtains and a bedspread. It all came together nicely to compliment my bedroom. Make sure you read through her entire tutorial several times. You will cut a strip from the one poster board and use that strip to create your templates from the 3 remaining poster boards. The candlesticks I got at local thrift stores. They were wood, brass and just plain ugly. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the look of oil rubbed bronze and spray painted all of the candlesticks. I do not like how the tops of our trees look in the finished product. I love a star on the top of my Christmas tree…so I bought flat wooden stars in the unfinished wood section at Michaels and I am going to spray paint and glitterize them and adhere them back to back over the top of the trees. Since my trees are packed up I will have to show you next year how the new tree tops will look then. I know…bummer! I’m almost tempted to climb in the attic but we will all have to wait ;)

Muffin Tin Advent Calendar

I was inspired to create this advent calendar from this post I found on Pinterest: http://queenvanna.wordpress.com/2008/11/12/and-a-happy-new-year/

She does have her own ETSY shop here: http://www.etsy.com/people/ScrapCanDo

My Muffin Tin Advent Calendar:

I have been searching for years to find that perfect Advent Calendar. When I found this pin on Pinterest I knew I could create this.

Here are the items you’ll need:

  • 24 count muffin tin (I got mine at Wal-Mart for $4.00)
  • Self adhesive magnetic business card holders (These come 50 to a pack at Staples for $14.99 however, if you are making one with a friend you can split this cost)
  • Christmas card stock (Michael’s and I prefer the shiny kind to make it pop)
  • Glitter numbers (Michael’s)
  • Embellishments

This is self explanatory just by looking at the picture but here is a helpful hint: I cut down the business card to the size I wanted; to make sure the hole was properly covered. I then used that as the template to cut the remaining card holders. Then I peeled off the sticker on the card and placed on the Christmas cardstock paper. I then cut the paper using the card as the outline. If you have wording or a picture you are trying to capture make sure you are centering the card. This was fun and easy to make and I got a lot of, “I want one!”

Pinterest Girls Night Out November 2011

This month was THE debut for our Pinterest GNO! We made monogrammed wreaths for Christmas. We were inspired by a blog that is no longer being published: Flourish Frugally. Here is our product:

This wreath was fun and messy to make. All you need are the following items:

  • Large paper mache’ letter from JoAnn’s ($5.00 *used a 50% off coupon)
  • Depending on your initial approximately 80 feet of thin garland. (Not sure how much I paid for this and was able to get from Dollar Tree)
  • Hot glue
  • Ribbon to make a customized bow

I don’t have step by step pictures to show you, I wish I did. Starting with February I will have that :-) All you do is start at the top of your letter and hot glue the garland in place. Begin wrapping your letter and hot glue every few inches. For the sides of my letter I cut pieces of garland to fit and glued in place. This wreath looked awesome on my red front door! You could also add battery operated wreath lights by using floral wire. Other friends placed their wreaths above the fireplace, hanging from their 2nd floor banister and on a wall. Your options are endless. I will forwarn you that this project was MESSY with a captial M! I had green pieces of garland all over the place and took a few vacuum jobs to get it all picked up but that was with 14 women in my house ;) The mess was worth it with these ladies. What more can you ask for with a craft, friends, drinks and food?!?
